• Traffic. Caruso's mall will ADD 35,000+ VEHICLE TRIPS PER DAY, on a par with Disneyland. The "85/15" plan does nothing to improve traffic on Interstate 5, which is not scheduled for improvements to be fully completed until 2035.
  • Environmental Impact.  (1) The "85/15" plan allows Caruso to BYPASS the standard CEQA review process. Every other Carlsbad developer has been subject to these standards for water, air, and soil quality. (2) WATER used for construction and maintenance of a mall is irresponsible during California's on-going DROUGHT. (3) More cars = MORE POLLUTION.
  • More Retail Space vs. Open Space.  Do we need ANOTHER MALL? We have the Forum Shops, Carlsbad Outlets, Paseo Carlsbad, La Costa Town Center, The Westfield Mall, and most importantly the many shops in Carlsbad Village.Let's stand strong with our local businesses!!
  • It's zoned commercial; won't someone else develop it?  Caruso is changing the zoning to allow for a mall. The Open Space land is already protected under Prop D, and the city has a lease to access the land (HUB Park lease) and $5MM to build out trails. We don't need Caruso's mall to get open space.  LET'S VOTE!

  • Mall on Lagoon.  A MEGA MALL DEVELOPER, Caruso Affiliated, is circumventing 30 years of Carlsbad planning policies to build a mall on the banks of Agua Hedionda Lagoon.
  • Big LA $$. Caruso Affiliated continues to use big $$ to suppress our RIGHT TO VOTE. As of June, it has spent $2.5 million on its marketing campaign run by political agencies with nationwide credentials. It has hired paid-per-signature petitioners from outside of Carlsbad - the initiative allowed Caruso Affiliated to bypass the standard approval process for developing in California.
  • City Council Disallows a Vote. The Carlsbad City Council IGNORED PLEAS of concerned citizens, approving Caruso's plan outright, disallowing the citizens of Carlsbad a voice - a vote - on this very important and impactful project.
  • Confusing and MisleadingDON'T BE CONFUSED by Caruso Affiliated marketing tactics. They use phrases like 'Open Space the Right Way" and "save our Strawberry Fields" - both of which are already protected by voters (Prop D. 2006)
