The thousands of Carlsbad residents who have already signed the referendum petition include many who understand the details of what is at stake.

Retired City Attorney Ron Ball didn't just sign the referendum, he is one of the many local volunteers circulating a petition to urge his friends and neighbors to sign.  Ron supports the referendum because " If you are going to do ballot box planning you need to actually take it to the ballot box."

Michael Holzmiller, retired former director of the Carlsbad Planning Department, agrees with him " I was disappointed in the decision not to put it to a vote.  Every other project in Carlsbad went through the normal review process. Since this is the only one that didn't, I think the people should have a right to vote on it, whether it is a good project or not."

Carl Pope, who recently retired after capping his parks and recreation career with completion of  Alga Norte Park, is concerned as a long time resident of Carlsbad.  He represents the views of many Carlsbad residents  " Do we Carlsbad citizens want to allow a developer to hijack the citizens initiative process to ram through a development and set a dangerous precedent?  Or do we want to really "do it the right way" and put it to a vote ?"

That really sums up the message of the referendum- let's do it the right way and "Let the People Vote."

The deadline for signing the referendum is Wed night September 23, 2014.  On Wednesday the real citizen's volunteer petition will be available for signing at :  Dove Library from 3- 5 PM, Buena Vista Nature Center on S. Coast Highway on the edge of BV Lagoon from 4 - 6 pm, and at Calavera Hills Park from 4-7 PM.  This will be the last chance for the community to assure their right to vote on this important project.
